Daily cleanings are important to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. This is because your teeth are covered with a sticky film of bacteria called plaque. Plaque occurs everyday because we eat everyday. Hence we brush every day. Plaque that is not removed can cause inflammation due to the toxins released by bacteria in it. This inflammation we call Gingivitis when the gums are red, swollen, bleeding on brushing and flossing.
Types of cleanings we offer are regular prophy , deep prophy and deep cleaning.Regular prophy is done when your gums are relatively in good health with less plaque, calculus and inflammation. Deep prophy is done when you have considerable amount of inflammation due to lot of plaque and tart tar above the gums in the absence of deep pockets, which may not need numbing the gums. Deep cleaning is done when you have gum disease involving loss of bone due to gum pockets which may result in eventual loosening of teeth and gaps between the teeth.
Plaque is the primary cause of dental disease and tooth decay. Regular dentist plaque removal maintains healthy gums and teeth.
If you have gone longer than 6 months or have bad tooth brushing habits you may be in need of a deep cleaning which will help you get back on track to health gums and teeth.
